DAHON.

Dahon is the world´s largest manufacturer of folding and electric bicycles. More than 220 patents and 30 years of quiet evolution and ingenious technologies, DAHON has shaped the way folding bikes are made and the way customers get from one place to another.

The company was founded in 1982 by David T. Hon. DaHon was founded on a vision of „green“ mobility, a form of transportation that not only serves to keep people healthier, but also preserves the enviroment for the next generation. As a relentless innovator, Hon toiled in his garage for seven years to create the perfect folding bicycle that would uphold these ideals. Hon and his brother Henry Hon decided to establish their own company from scratch. The two gathered venture funding and established their headquarters in Southern California while Hon relocated to Taiwan to build Dahon´s first factory. The first folding bike was a success: offering all the riding performance of a standard bike, but transforming quickly to a compact size for stowing or carrying.

Two years later, in 1984, Dahon folding bicycles were rolling off the assembly line as one of the most compact folding bicycle on the market at that time.

Most Dahon bicycles use a patended, single-hinge frame design where the handlebar folds down and the frame hinge swings to the left, leaving the handlebar inside, whereas models such as the Jifo and EEZZ take advantage of new, vertical folding technology. The biggest seller are those with 16 or 20 inch wheels, but models are available with wheels from 12 to 26 inches. In terms of gearing, bikes can feature derailleurs or hug gears, aluminum alloy or steel frames.

The technologies behind Dr. David Hon’s patents for frame and wheel configurations, metal alloys and folding mechanisms have delivered the mechanical basis for 98% of today’s folding bicycles. At design competitions around the world, their unique folding bike model won award after award.
